During the third week of our Upward Bound Summer Program, students had an exciting and hands-on experience exploring careers in aviation and the military. The week’s highlight was a visit to the Kankakee Greater Airport, where students were introduced to the world of aviation through engaging presentations and interactive learning opportunities. They learned about different career paths such as pilots, air traffic controllers, aircraft maintenance technicians, and airport operations. Students were able to see aircraft up close, ask questions to professionals in the field, and gain a better understanding of what it takes to work in aviation.
In addition, students visited the National Guard facility, where they were exposed to military careers and the wide range of opportunities available within the armed forces. They learned about discipline, teamwork, leadership, and the importance of service. National Guard members shared their personal experiences, discussed training requirements, and demonstrated equipment, giving students a real-world perspective on military life.
Throughout the week, students continued to build important skills such as communication, critical thinking, and teamwork through group discussions and reflective activities. This week not only expanded their knowledge of aviation and military careers but also encouraged them to think about future pathways and the many opportunities available to them after high school.
