During the second week of our Upward Bound Summer Program, students focused on developing essential life skills that will support them both in college and in their everyday lives. The week was centered around financial literacy, nutrition, and daily living skills, giving students practical knowledge they can apply immediately. Through interactive workshops, students learned how to budget, understand credit, manage expenses, and make informed financial decisions. They also explored the importance of maintaining a balanced diet, reading nutrition labels, and building healthy habits that contribute to overall well-being.
Students participated in engaging, hands-on activities that encouraged independence and responsibility, such as planning meals, setting personal goals, and discussing real-life scenarios related to managing time and money. The highlight of the week was a visit to Kankakee Community College’s Automotive Department, where students received an introduction to basic car maintenance. They learned how to change a car’s oil, rotate and change a tire, and understand the importance of routine vehicle care. This experience not only built confidence but also equipped students with practical skills they can use in real-life situations.
Overall, the week emphasized empowerment, helping students feel more prepared to navigate adulthood while continuing to build confidence, responsibility, and independence.
